Ghazal No. 217: O Muslims, there was a time I had a heart
O Muslims, there was a time when I had a heart
With which I would speak if there was a problem
When I fell into a whirlpool of sorrow
With its counsel, there was hope for a shore
A sympathetic heart and a wise companion
That was the support of every heartfelt person
I lost it in the alley of the beloved
What a fateful place it was, O Lord
Excellence is not without flaws, yet
Who was more deprived than I
Have mercy on this troubled soul
For once it was a capable complete one
Since love taught me to speak
My discourse was the subtlety of every gathering
Do not say anymore that Hafez is a connoisseur
For we saw and it was sheer ignorance
