Ghazal No. 243: Your sweet scent, whoever hears it from the morning breeze
The scent of you, whoever heard it from the breeze of the morning
Heard familiar words from a familiar friend
O king of beauty, look at the state of the beggar
For this ear has heard many stories of the king and the beggar
I am delighted with the musky wine, the scent of the soul
For I have heard the scent of hypocrisy from the cloak-wearing monk
The secret of God, which the mystic traveler did not tell to anyone
I am bewildered that the wine seller heard it from somewhere
O Lord, where is the confidant of the secret, who at one time
Will reveal the heart and tell what was said and what was heard
This is not worthy of my heart, which is a servant of the truth
For I have heard unworthy words from my own comforter
If I am deprived of the head of his street, what happened
To the garden of time, which heard the scent of loyalty
O cupbearer, come, for love is calling loudly
The one who told our story also heard it from us
We do not drink wine under the cloak today
The old wine seller has heard this story a hundred times
We do not drink wine to the sound of the harp today
It has been a long time since the dome of the sky heard this sound
The advice of the wise is pure goodness and the essence of kindness
Blessed is the one who heard it with the ear of contentment
Hafez, your duty is only to pray
Do not be concerned whether he heard or did not hear
