Ghazal No. 279: How fortunate is Shiraz and its unparalleled condition
Happy is Shiraz and its unparalleled state
O Lord, protect it from decline
From our Ruknabad, a hundred praises to God
For its pure water grants the lifespan of Khidr
Between Jafarabad and the prayer ground
Its northern breeze comes fragrant with amber
Come to Shiraz and seek the grace of the holy spirit
Seek it from its people of perfection
For the name of Egyptian sugar is carried there
For the sweet ones did not give it weakness
O breeze, from that playful, intoxicated beauty
What news do you have of her state?
If that sweet boy sheds my blood
O heart, make it lawful like mother's milk
Do not wake me from sleep, for God's sake
For I have a pleasant solitude with her thought
Why, Hafez, did you fear separation
And not give thanks for the days of union?
