Ghazal No. 281: O Lord, this new smiling flower that you entrusted to my care
O Lord, this laughing bud that you entrusted to me
I entrust it back to you from the envious eye of the garden
Though it has become a hundred stages distant from the alley of loyalty
May the affliction of the distant heavens be far from its soul and body
If you reach the abode of peace, O morning breeze
I hope you will convey a greeting from me
With courtesy, open the musk from that black tress
It is the place of precious hearts, do not disturb it
Say, my heart has the right of loyalty with your mole and beauty
Respect it in that amber-breaking lock
In the place where they drink in memory of her lips
Wretched is the drunkard who is aware of himself
Wealth and possessions should not be hoarded from the tavern door
Whoever drinks this water, cast their belongings into the sea
Whoever fears the weariness of love's sorrow, it is not lawful for them
Our head and its foot, or our lips and its mouth
All of Hafez's poetry is the couplet of the ghazal of knowledge
Praise be to his charming soul and the grace of his words
