Ghazal No. 284: A voice from the corner of the tavern spoke last night
Last night, a voice from the corner of the tavern
Said, 'They will forgive sins, so drink wine'
The divine grace will do its work
The herald will bring the good news of mercy
This raw intellect, take it to the tavern
So that the ruby wine may bring its blood to a boil
Though union with the beloved is not given through effort
Still, O heart, strive as much as you can
The grace of God is greater than our sins
What do you know of the hidden secret? Be silent
My ear and the ringlet of the beloved's hair
My face and the dust at the tavern door
Hafez's libertinism is not a grave sin
With the king's generosity, faults are covered
The judge of religion, the brave king, who made
The Holy Spirit a ring in his ear of command
O King of the Throne, grant his wish
And protect him from the evil eye's danger
