Ghazal No. 285: In the era of the king, a generous one covers sins
In the era of the king who forgives sins
Hafez became a wine-seller and the mufti drank from the cup
The Sufi sat with bent legs in the corner of the monastery
Until the censor saw him carrying a wine-skin on his shoulder
The state of the sheikh, the judge, and their drinking of wine
I asked the old wine-seller about it in the morning
He said, 'It is not to be spoken, though you are a confidant'
Keep your tongue and veil, and drink wine
The cupbearer of spring arrives, and the face remains
Think of a way, for the blood of the heart has come to a boil from sorrow
It is love, and poverty, and youth, and the new spring
Accept my excuse, and cover my sin with the cloak of generosity
How long will you speak like a candle
The moth of desire has arrived, O silent lover
O king of form and meaning, who is like you
Unseen by any eye, and unheard by any ear
Stay as long as the blue cloak is accepted
Your youth's fortune is from the old, tattered heavens
