Ghazal No. 428: At dawn, intoxicated by the night's dreams.
At dawn, when drunk from the night
I took wine with the harp and the cup
I made reason's provision for the journey from wine
And sent it away from the city of existence
The wine-seller gave me a coquetry
So that I became safe from the deceit of time
From the cupbearer with bow-like eyebrows, I heard
He said, 'O arrow of blame, take aim'
You will not tie a side like a shy one
If you see yourself in the middle
Go, set this trap for another bird
For the phoenix has a high nest
Who can tie the side of union with the beauty of a king
Who keeps love with himself eternally
The companion, the minstrel, and the cupbearer are all him
The illusion of water and clay is an excuse on the path
Give the ship of wine so that we may sail happily
From this boundless sea
Our existence is a riddle, O Hafez
Its investigation is magic and legend
