Ghazal No. 455: Life has passed in futility and foolish desires.

Life passed in futility and whimsy,

O boy, give me a cup of wine so that you may reach old age.

What wonders there are in this city that they have become content,

The royal falcons of the path (of spirituality) to the rank of a fly.

Last night I was going in the crowd of his door's servants,

He said, 'O wretched lover, who are you anyway?'

With a heart filled with blood, he should be happy like a musk pod,

Whoever became world-famous for his fragrant breath.

The lightning flashed from Mount Sinai, and that is enough

Perhaps for me there will come a fiery meteor.

The caravan has departed, and you are asleep, and the desert lies ahead,

Alas, how unaware you are of the clanging of so many bells.

Open your wings and whistle from the Tuba tree,

It is a pity that a bird like you is captive in a cage.

So that like a censer, I may take hold of the beloved's skirt,

We have placed our lives on the fire in pursuit of a pleasant breath.

How long will Hafez run in your desire from every direction?

May God ease a path to you, O my seeker.
