My dear, who told you not to ask about our condition?
Become a stranger and don't ask about any acquaintance's story.
جانا تو را که گفت که احوال ما مپرس
بیگانه گرد و قصهٔ هیچ آشنا مپرس
Since your kindness is all-encompassing and your nature is generous,
Pardon even without a committed offense, and don't ask about the details.
ز آنجا که لطف شامل و خلق کریم توست
جرم نکرده عفو کن و ماجرا مپرس
If you want to understand the state of our burning passion,
Ask the candle for the story; don't ask the wind for the story.
خواهی که روشنت شود احوال سوز ما
از شمع پرس قصه ز باد هوا مپرس
I know the pleasure of your love's burning, not the claimant (false pretender),
Ask the candle for the story; don't ask the wind for the story.
من ذوق سوز عشق تو دانم نه مدعی
از شمع پرس قصه ز باد هوا مپرس
He had no understanding of the world of dervishes,
The one who told you not to ask about the dervish.
هیچ آگهی ز عالم درویشیش نبود
آن کس که با تو گفت که درویش را مپرس
Don't seek ready cash from the robe-wearer of the hermitage,
That is, don't ask the penniless for the secret of alchemy.
از دلق‌پوش صومعه نقد طلب مجوی
یعنی ز مفلسان سخن کیمیا مپرس
In the book of the wise physician, there is no chapter on love,
O heart, get used to the pain and don't ask for the name of the medicine.
در دفتر طبیب خرد باب عشق نیست
ای دل به درد خو کن و نام دوا مپرس
We have not read the story of Alexander and Darius,
Don't ask us for anything other than tales of love and loyalty.
ما قصهٔ سکندر و دارا نخوانده‌ایم
از ما به جز حکایت مهر و وفا مپرس
