No. 17: It is the day of Eid, and I ponder today - To give away the fruit of thirty days and take up the cup.

It is Eid today, and I am planning today

To give the result of thirty days (of fasting) and take the cup.

It has been a few days since I have been away from the face of the cupbearer and the cup,

Much shame has come upon me because of this shortcoming.

I will not sit in seclusion after this, even if, like

The ascetic of the hermitage puts chains on my feet.

The preacher of my city gives old men's advice, but

I am not one who will accept anyone's advice anymore.

Where is the one who gave his life on the dust of the tavern's door?

So that I may place my head at his feet and die before him.

Wine beneath (the cloak) and the prayer rug of piety on the shoulder,

Alas, if people become aware of this hypocrisy of mine.

People say that Hafez listens to the words of old men,

Today's aged wine is better than a hundred old men.
