Parvin E'tesami, born Rakhshandeh E'tesami on March 16, 1907, in Tabriz, Iran, was a distinguished Persian poet renowned for her profound and socially conscious poetry. She was the daughter of Mirza Yusef E'tesami (E'tesamolmolk), a respected journalist and man of letters, who played a pivotal role in her education, providing her with a solid foundation in Arabic and classical Persian literature.
At a young age, Parvin's family relocated to Tehran, where she attended the Iran Bethel School, an American high school for girls. She graduated in 1924 and briefly taught at the same institution. Demonstrating literary talent early on, Parvin began composing poetry at the age of eight. Her works often addressed themes of social justice, the plight of the poor, and the importance of education, particularly for women.
In 1934, Parvin married Fazlollah E'tesami, a cousin of her father, and moved to Kermanshah. However, the marriage was short-lived, lasting only about ten weeks, leading to her return to Tehran. She chose to focus on her literary pursuits, declining an invitation to tutor the queen of the Pahlavi court in 1926. In 1936, she was awarded the third-degree Iran Medal of Art and Culture by Reza Shah Pahlavi, which she declined.
Parvin's poetry is characterized by its use of allegory and personification, often employing dialogues between inanimate objects or abstract concepts to convey moral and ethical lessons. Her only published collection, "Divan-e Parvin E'tesami," was first released in 1935, containing 209 poems that reflect her deep concern for humanity and social issues.
Tragically, Parvin's life was cut short when she succumbed to typhoid fever on April 5, 1941, in Tehran. She was buried near her father in Qom, close to the Masumeh shrine. Her legacy endures through her poetry, which continues to inspire and resonate with readers, highlighting her as one of Iran's most influential female poets.
