Literal:

"If you picture your heart's desire from time,
you will only grow old in vain sorrows.

Suppose you complain to a friend about an enemy,
but what remedy can you find when a friend wrongs you?"

Poetic:

"If you paint hope on time's fickle art,
Your sorrows will weigh heavy on your heart.

If friends betray, what solace can you find,
When foes are cruel, but friends are unkind?"
