English Translation for Ghazal

We’ve placed the lessons of dawn on the path of the tavern
We’ve placed the fruit of our prayers on the path of the beloved.

The fire of this passion that we’ve placed on our mad hearts
Would burn the harvest of a hundred wise ascetics.

The eternal Sultan gave us the treasure of the sorrow of love
So that we could set our faces towards this ruined abode.

I will not give my heart to anyone else after this love of the idol
We’ve placed the love of his lips on the door of this house.

One cannot be more hypocritical in this robe
We’ve founded this reckless way of life.

Where will this wandering ship finally go?
We’ve placed our lives on that single pearl.

Praise be to God, for we, who were without heart and religion
We bestowed the titles of wise and sage upon him.

Hafez, content with a thought of you
Oh God, how I’ve begged you and made you a stranger.
