English Translation for Ghazal

With the intention of repentance, I sought an omen at dawn
But the spring of breaking vows is coming, what can I do?

I cannot honestly say
That I can watch my companions drink wine.

Like a rosebud with a smiling lip, remembering the king’s gathering
I’ll take a cup and tear my clothes in ecstasy.

Cure my headache with the scent of a tulip
If I were to leave the midst of this joyful gathering.

Since my friend’s face has blossomed like a wish-fulfilling flower
I’ll entrust the head of my enemy to a sharp stone.

I am a beggar of the tavern, but see me when I am drunk
I will give orders to the heavens and command the stars.

I who have no knowledge of the ways of asceticism
Why should I reproach the wine-drinking rogue?

I will seat a beloved on a flower throne like a sultan
And make a necklace and earring from hyacinth and narcissus.

Hafez has grown weary of secretly drinking wine
I will reveal his secret with the sound of the lute and flute.
