I heard about a king who spent a night in revelry and, at the end of his drunkenness, said:
“There is no moment in the world more delightful than this, When we have no thoughts of good or bad, and no worries about anyone.”
A dervish, who was sleeping outside in the cold, said:
“O you who have no equal in the world due to your fortune, Even if you have no worries, do you not care about our troubles?”
The king was pleased and threw a purse of a thousand dinars out of the window, saying, “Hold out your skirt, O dervish.” The dervish replied, “How can I hold out my skirt when I have no clothes?” The king felt even more compassion for his plight and sent him a robe in addition to the money.
The dervish quickly spent the money and returned to his previous state.
Wealth does not stay in the hands of the free, Nor patience in the heart of a lover, nor water in a sieve.
When the king was no longer concerned with him, they informed him of the dervish’s situation. The king frowned and turned away, saying, “The wise have said that one should be cautious of the anger and severity of kings, for their main concern is the great affairs of the kingdom, and they cannot tolerate the crowding of the common people.”
He does not deserve the king’s bounty, Who does not look after it when given the opportunity. Do not speak until you see the right moment, Do not lower your worth by speaking in vain.
He said, “Expel this impudent and wasteful beggar who squandered such a bounty in such a short time, for the treasury of the public is the morsel of the needy, not the food of the brothers of the devils.”
A fool who lights a camphor candle in broad daylight, Will soon find himself without oil for his lamp at night.
One of the wise ministers said, “O lord, I see it as beneficial to provide such people with a regular allowance in small amounts so that they do not waste it all at once. However, what you have ordered in terms of punishment and prohibition is not suitable for people of high spirit. To give hope to someone with kindness and then crush them with disappointment is not right.”
You cannot open the door of greed to yourself, Once opened, it cannot be closed with harshness. No one sees the thirsty of Hijaz, Gathering around bitter water. Wherever there is a sweet spring, People, birds, and ants gather.
