English Translation for Hekayat
They tell the story of a miserly beggar who had amassed great wealth.
One of the kings said to him: “It appears that you have boundless wealth, and we have an important need. If you assist us with some of it, it will be repaid when the revenue comes in, and you will be thanked.”
The beggar replied: “O lord of the earth! It is not fitting for the great king to soil his noble hand with the wealth of a beggar like me, which I have gathered grain by grain through begging.”
The king said: “It does not matter, for I will give it to an infidel. ‘The impure for the impure.’”
"If the water of a Christian well is not pure,
What harm is there in washing a dead Jew?"
"They say that lime paste is not pure,
We say we use it to seal the cracks in the toilet."
I heard that the beggar defied the king’s command, made excuses, and acted insolently.
The king ordered that he be punished and reprimanded.
"When gentleness does not work,
One must resort to harshness.
Whoever does not show mercy to himself,
Should not expect mercy from others."
متن حکایت
گدایی هول را حکایت کنند که نعمتی وافر اندوخته بود.
یکی از پادشاهان گفتش: همی‌نمایند که مالِ بی‌کران داری و ما را مهمّی هست، اگر به برخی از آن دست‌گیری کنی چون ارتفاع رسد وفا کرده شود و شُکر گفته.
گفت: ای خداوندِ روی زمین! لایقِ قَدرِ بزرگوارِ پادشاه نباشد دستِ همّت به مالِ چون من گدایی آلوده کردن که جو جو به گدایی فراهم آورده‌ام.
گفت: غم نیست که به کافر می‌دهم، اَلْخَبیثاتُ لِلْخَبیثین.
گر آبِ چاهِ نَصرانی نه پاک است
جهودِ مُرده می‌شویی چه باک است؟
قالوُا عَجِینُ الْکِلْسِ لَیْسَ بِطاهِرٍ
قُلْنٰا نَسُدُّ بِهِ شُقوُقَ الْمَبْرَزِ
شنیدم که سر از فرمانِ ملک باز زد و حُجَّت آوردن گرفت و شوخ‌چشمی کردن.
بفرمود تا مَضمونِ خِطاب از او به زجر و توبیخ مُخَلَّص کردند.
به لطافت چو بر‌نیاید کار
سر به بی‌حرمتی کِشَد ناچار
هر‌که بر خویشتن نبخشاید
گر نبخشد کسی بر او، شاید
