English Translation for Hekayat

There was a pure-hearted and righteous young man
Who was in love with a person of pure beauty.

It is written that they both fell together
Into a whirlpool in the vast sea.

When the sailor came to save him,
So that he would not perish in that perilous moment,

The young man cried out amidst the waves and turmoil:
“Leave me and save the hand of my beloved.”

As the world was closing in on him,
They heard him, giving his final breaths, saying:

"Do not listen to the words of one who claims to love,
But forgets their beloved in times of hardship."

Such is the way of people in life.
Listen to those who have fallen, so you may know.

For Saadi knows the ways of love
As well as an Arab knows Baghdad.

The beloved who has captured your heart,
Turn your eyes away from the rest of the world for their sake.

If Majnun had returned to life,
He would have written of love from this book.
