One of the wise men was advising his son against overeating, saying that satiety makes people sick.
The son replied: “O father! Hunger kills people. Haven’t you heard the saying that it is better to die from overeating than to suffer from hunger?”
The father said: “Maintain moderation, ‘Eat and drink, but do not be excessive.’”
"Do not eat so much that it comes out of your mouth,
Nor so little that you become weak from hunger.
Although food brings joy to the soul,
It causes distress if consumed in excess.
If you eat sugar by force, it will harm you,
But if you eat dry bread with patience, it will be like sugar.
A sick person was asked: ‘What do you desire?’
He replied: ‘That my heart desires nothing.’
When the stomach is upset and stomachache arises,
No remedy will be effective."
