English Translation for Hekayat

Whoever associates with the wicked, even if their nature does not influence him, will be suspected of following their ways; and if he goes to a tavern to pray, he will be accused of drinking wine.

You have branded yourself with ignorance,

By choosing the company of the foolish.

I asked a wise man for advice,

He told me, 'Do not associate with the foolish,

For if you are a wise man among fools, you will be considered a donkey,

And if you are foolish, you will be even more ridiculous.

Saadi's wisdom here underscores the importance of the company one keeps. It teaches us that associating with the wrong people can lead to negative perceptions and potential misjudgment of one's character. Saadi's timeless insights continue to offer valuable lessons on the influence of companions and the importance of surrounding oneself with wise and virtuous individuals.
