English Translation for Hekayat

The highest of all creatures in appearance is man, and the lowest of all creatures is the dog, but according to the consensus of the wise, a grateful dog is better than an ungrateful man.

A dog never forgets a morsel of food,

Even if you strike it a hundred times with a stone.

But if you show kindness to a vile person for a lifetime,

With the slightest harshness, they will come to fight you.

Saadi's wisdom here highlights the contrast between gratitude and ingratitude. It teaches us that even a lowly creature like a dog remembers and appreciates kindness, whereas an ungrateful person forgets goodwill and turns hostile at the slightest provocation. Saadi's timeless insights continue to offer valuable lessons on the importance of gratitude and the nature of true appreciation.
