English Translation for Hekayat

An indulgent person does not become skilled, and a person without skill does not deserve leadership.

Do not pity the overworked ox,

For it sleeps much and eats much.

If you desire the fatness of an ox,

You will have to endure the hardships of others like a donkey.

Saadi's wisdom here emphasizes the importance of discipline and skill in achieving success. It teaches us that indulgence and laziness do not lead to mastery, and without skill, one does not deserve to lead. The verses use the metaphor of animals to highlight the need for hard work and resilience. Saadi's timeless insights continue to offer valuable lessons on the value of diligence and the importance of earning one's position through skill and effort.
