Omar Khayyam, c. 1048–1131, was a legendary Persian philosopher-poet who made significant contributions to algebra and helped to refine the calendar during the 11th Century.

To read his Rubaiyat (collected poems) is to listen in to a thousand-year-old conversation on how to endure, enjoy, and find beauty in the fleeting time we have.
